The warm weather is in full swing, and with it, so is spending time outside! Whether you’re grilling out, serving appetizers, or reading a book, an outdoor living space is crucial to a summer spent outside! And you don’t necessarily need a huge deck or sprawling patio to create an inviting space. Here are five things that will help you create a cozy outdoor living space.
Think of providing different kinds of seating… benches, chairs, hammocks, and poufs. Having a variety will not only create a cozier space, but it also gives your guests plenty of options. And you can definitely get creative! What may not pass as seating indoors could when it’s outside—an upside down metal tub perhaps?

Sprinkle candles, lanterns, or string lights throughout your space. I like to use a citronella candle to keep the mosquitos away, and string lights help the space feel inviting even when the sun goes down!
No outdoor space is complete without some greenery! Scatter potted plants and flowers throughout your space, or incorporate some hanging plants or an herb garden. Your patio or deck is a great space to keep plants that need a little extra love!

As you’re filling your space with seating, planters, pillows, etc., think about how you can utilize different textures and patterns. This will give your space depth and interest. Try to incorporate different materials like wood, metal, cotton, stone, etc.
And last but not least, don’t forget about function and durability! If you live somewhere where there is a lot of rain, you’re going to want to make sure everything is water-proof. If it’s often windy, make sure things are secure. Your space won’t be cozy and inviting for long if it can’t withstand the elements or if you’re always worried about things getting ruined.
Happy outdoor lounging!
I have a win-win-win-oops-win going on here on my south-facing deck with a rooftop cover. We live out here as much as possible for 7-8 months of the year in Colorado.
I spend morning coffee and quiet time at the table; when I get home from work, I love to crash in one of our swinging skychairs; and most suppers during warm weather are on our deck.
The only “interesting” texture I have happening is the uneven, tired floor that really ought to be replaced. I should take your advice and get an outdoor rug!
We also have replacement of our twinkle lights on “the list,” as a couple sections aren’t working. But I love the feel of soft lighting when we’re out there after dark!
Sounds like a fun space is shaping up! 🙂 What is a skychair?? It sounds magical! And ha on the interesting texture! I love having my old college rug out on our patio… it really helps to make it more home-y. And twinkle lights are the best part!
THIS is a skychair!

Wow. That looks AMAZING! We have something similar, but not with the hanging footrest!!!
The sky chair contraption looks like I could twist wrong and break an ankle getting out of it! ha ha! Well, I get to try it out in two days since I’ll be at your house, Rebecca!
How did that go???
This is an awesome read. Thanks for sharing this to us!
