I’m back at it again answering another reader question! Today’s question is all about maximizing space!
I am wondering how to set up a room that has SO much furniture. I have two large dressers, my desk, a full size bed, and a wooden headboard that takes up quite a bit of room. How do you arrange it so it’s not so furniture heavy without removing anything (if that’s even possible!?)?
I think that this is a question that many of us struggle with in our homes! Too much furniture, too little space. The overarching answer is this: can you get rid of any of your stuff? The #1 best thing you can do for a room is to edit! Take out what you don’t like, what isn’t functioning well, and what doesn’t help the room serve its purpose. But if you’ve already done that, or feel you must keep everything you have, then I have three suggestions.

My first suggestion, assuming that you’ve done all the purging you can, is to think vertical! Just look around you… there is loads of space to be gained on your walls! You can add storage through hanging shelves, swapping out larger dressers for ones that are tall and narrow, or hanging baskets.

While you’re thinking vertical, why not higher your bar in your closet to make room for a dresser? Putting a dresser in your closet is one of the best ways to gain a ton of space in your room! If you have a tall and narrow chest of drawers, it can even go beside your hanging clothes, rather than underneath. Consider if moving a dresser into your closet could be a solution for your space!

Lastly, if you have a smaller room, I would recommend choosing pieces that have a smaller footprint… or no footprint at all, like a wall-hung desk! Picking furniture that is less bulky will make your room feel much less cramped.
But I get it! Buying all new furniture isn’t always an option! But perhaps look around and see if there are one or two pieces that you could either use elsewhere in your home or sell on Craigslist and replace with something smaller in scale—even if it’s from a thrift shop or another room in your home! Swapping out furniture between rooms is the most affordable way to decorate your home! 🙂
I hope those suggestions help! Happy arranging!
